The High Line Canal Trail’s missing, unfinished segment posed challenges for users, with unsafe crossings over busy roads and limited access between sections of the 71-mile trail. To close the gap, this project connected two sections with a new 1.8-mile, 8-foot-wide concrete
multi-use trail between E. Colfax Avenue and I-70. Key features include a 266-foot pedestrian bridge over I-70, eight at-grade crossings, a small canal bridge and an at-grade rail crossing.
The I-70 pedestrian bridge, constructed from weathered steel, spans the interstate in two sections, providing safe, protected passage and mountain views. Placed in two nights to reduce traffic disruption, the nearly 17-foot-wide bridge improves connectivity for trail users. A second
14-foot-wide, 47-foot-long single span steel truss bridge crosses the canal south of Smith Road, minimizing the impact to the historic channel. Designed with input from the community, the trail enhances access to recreation and serves a diverse population in the Denver Metro area
Historic signs along the trail highlight the canal’s legacy and its role in regional development. By improving safety and accessibility, the project delivers a continuous, vibrant corridor for outdoor activities and connectivity across the metro area.
