District Energy Solutions for Resilient, Efficient and Sustainable Campuses

November 3, 2026 | 3 min read

Campus energy infrastructure is at a turning point. University campuses across North America face growing pressure to modernize aging infrastructure, improve energy efficiency, reduce emissions and control costs. Campuses that thrive will modernize strategically, leveraging district energy systems to balance these competing priorities.

Stanley Consultants helps campuses navigate these decisions with confidence. By combining strategic advisory services, engineering design and construction support, we deliver practical district energy solutions that are reliable, cost-effective and ready for what’s next.

Why Does Campus Energy Planning Needs a New Playbook?

Many campus energy systems were designed for a different era – one with smaller loads, simpler requirements and energy needs based on historical weather data that no longer holds true. Today, growing energy demands, aging infrastructure, evolving sustainability goals and more frequent extreme weather events are placing greater pressure on energy system reliability. Proactive planning must account for current system performance, future energy needs and projected climate conditions so systems are sized, designed and operated to meet tomorrow’s challenges. Without this foresight, today’s upgrades may fall short of future needs.

An Integrated Approach That Looks Ahead

Meeting tomorrow’s energy demands requires more than individual upgrades. It requires an integrated approach that connects long-term planning, engineering and delivery to turn modernization goals into results. This approach includes:

  • Infrastructure modernization planning – modernization roadmaps and phased implementation plans to address aging central utility plants.
  • Decarbonization and energy transition strategies – renewable and electrification integration, geo-exchange and thermal energy storage to advance decarbonization goals.
  • Resiliency and reliability solutions – microgrids, onsite generation, CHP and resilient power strategies to improve energy system reliability.
  • Campus energy planning – master planning and system studies for district energy and distributed generation to support future campus growth and development.
  • Investment and funding strategy – lifecycle cost analysis, investment prioritization and funding guidance to help manage budget constraints.
  • Climate resilience and adaptation planning – location-specific climate risk assessments and practical adaptation strategies to inform resilient campus energy planning, design and investment decisions.

The result is infrastructure that meets today’s reliability, cost and sustainability goals while remaining adaptable as campus needs and conditions change.

Delivering Campus Energy Solutions Across North America

With more than 110 years of engineering experience, we plan, design, modernize and optimize campus and district energy systems across North America. Whether modernizing a central utility plant, expanding district cooling, implementing a microgrid or developing an energy transition strategy, our work helps clients move confidently from strategy to implementation.

Every campus and district energy system is different. Here is how we have helped clients turn energy goals into results:

  • Lower costs, greater efficiency – At Austin Energy's District Cooling Plant 4, we provided design-build engineering for an innovative 3,000-ton modular chiller plant that supports peak-load management and delivers significant annual cost savings.
  • Stronger resiliency – For Michigan State University, we served as engineer of record for a new 28 MW power plant that strengthens campus resiliency while supporting long-term energy transition goals.
  • Modernization without disruption – At the University of Texas at San Antonio, we supported a five-phase, 10-year modernization effort that transformed critical campus infrastructure while maintaining continuous campus operations throughout construction.
  • Advancing campus energy strategy – For Illinois Institute of Technology, we guided the university through initial assessments and planning for a long-term utility agreement, culminating in a new trigeneration system that produces electricity, hot water and chilled water for its Chicago campus of more than 20 buildings.
  • Adapting campuses for future needs – Through the National K-12 Heat Increase Study, we assessed cooling needs across 93,000 public schools in 48 states, providing data to help understand future system upgrades, installations and operating costs.

Each campus had different priorities. What they share is a strategic, integrated approach that modernizes critical infrastructure while improving resiliency, efficiency and long-term performance.
