Thomopulos Receives Ellis Island Medal of Honor

Iowa City, IA - Gregs G. Thomopulos, chair emeritus of Stanley Consultants and an icon in the engineering industry, has been awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. This prestigious award is presented each year on Ellis Island to a select group of individuals for their accomplishments in their fields and inspired service to the nation. Thomopulos was selected for his support for higher education and individuals with disabilities, as well as his work to advance sustainable infrastructure.

His service includes 34 years on the Goodwill of the Heartland Board of Directors, where he has served since 1988. A graduate of the University of Kansas, he and his wife Mettie established endowed scholarship programs at both the University of Kansas and the University of Iowa to assist engineering students who require financial assistance. He also serves on the boards of both the KU Endowment Association and the University of Iowa Center for Advancement.

His 51-year engineering career was with Stanley Consultants, where he served as president and CEO for over 20 years and as chair of the board for 10 years prior to his retirement as chair emeritus in 2017. During this time, he was also elected chair of the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), as well as president of the International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC), the global association of consulting engineering firms based in Geneva, Switzerland. He is a long-time champion of integrity and ethics in global infrastructure and is a popular speaker on the subject. 

The prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honor is recognized by Congress as one of the nation’s most prestigious award with honorees recorded annually in the official Congressional Record. Past recipients include U.S. presidents, world leaders, Nobel Prize winners and other recognized leaders. Thomopulos is thought to be the only Iowan ever to receive the award.
