Illinois Tollway Constructs Piers Under Existing Structure, Reducing Project Time

Stanley Consultants conducted a value engineering study on this $77 million project to replace the aging I-90 Tollway Bridge over the Fox River. The challenge faced was to minimize impact to the traveling public, as this would not only reduce revenue loss from decreased tollway usage, but also enhance travel safety. The value engineering team had the idea to significantly lengthen individual bridge spans, thereby increasing the structural depth and lowering required pier elevations. This allowed for the piers to be constructed without touching the existing structure or impacting traffic above. This recommendation saved six months on the construction schedule and allowed for Illinois Tollway to keep all six travel lanes open during bridge construction.
